Which is the trek for you?

Rwanda and Uganda trekking experiences can vary for each person that treks. The following is an overall consensus about the basic differences. Whichever country you choose to visit, we can assure you that your close-up visit with the gorillas will be like no other.

ACCESSIBILITY

Arrangements can be made for all those who wish to see the gorillas. Gorilla tracking is physically demanding, especially for those with physical challenges. Seeing the gorillas is still possible. By special arrangement, porters can carry a guest in a "sedan" chair. Uganda carriers are more comfortable than in Rwanda.

VIEWING

Gorillas of Rwanda and Uganda belong to the same species, yet there are subtle differences due to their environments. Sightings in both countries are up to chance, but Born Free has never had a traveler not see them. Search times will vary by how many are in a family group and how close you can approach. One hour to view is the same in both countries. Families move up and down the mountains – treks can vary in length of time. Born Free can request permits for lower families. This is assigned by the park ranger on the day you trek.

RWANDA GORILLA TREKKING (VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK)

Rwanda's groups are sometimes easier to photograph than Uganda due to the lighter vegetation.

• Trekking Difficulty: Generally considered less physically demanding, with steeper slopes in places but more established, clearer paths due to the foliage in the area. Rwanda's bamboo slopes are often easier to hike than Uganda’s dense terrain. Trekking is generally done at higher altitudes (7,800 ft +).

• Rwanda best for those with limited time, prefer not to fly and prioritizing high comfort.

• Rwanda Permit cost: current rate of $1500 each.

• Accommodation: high-end luxury properties

• Access: Beautiful drive from Kigali, only requiring 2-3 hours.

UGANDA GORILLA TREKKING (BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK)

Uganda forests are denser than Rwanda, but rangers will clear trails and brush around sightings.

• Trekking Difficulty: Terrain is denser than Rwanda. Average altitude of 3,800-8,500 feet.

• Uganda best for those looking for more of selection in accommodations. Also, for those who would like to visit with chimps in their natural habitat or Queen Elizabeth National Park.

• Permit cost: Current rate of $800 each for foreign non-residents.

• Accommodations: More choices available than Rwanda - mid to high end.

• Access: Travelers generally fly from Entebbe to base camp unless visiting other parks in Uganda. Drive time from Entebbe to the base is 8-10 hours.

GORILLA PERMITS

Gorilla trekking permits are highly regulated with approximately 1,050 mountain gorillas left in the wild. To ensure the well-being of their habitat, both countries regulate the number of daily visitors. Proceeds from the permits are dedicated to the national park and protecting the gorillas. Permits require booking months in advance, especially for the high demand season. Born Free can request lower family permits, the final assignment is given by the head park ranger on the day of the trek. Rules are extremely strict. If there is any signs of a cold or fever, you will not be able to trek.
