Malaria-Free "Big Five" Safari & Cape Town

10 Days/9 Nights

Begin your trip in Cape Town, sophisticated modern city of great natural beauty. From the striking Table Mountain that crowns the city to the fynbos-covered, protea hills of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Cape region will enchant you. There is something that will appeal to travelers of all ages. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is home to 5-star restaurants. Downtown the Zeitz MOCCA museum is a not-to-miss site. Formally a gigantic grain silo, it now houses the world’s largest collection of contemporary African art, as well as the 6-star Silo Hotel. Nearby, the narrow, cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap are lined with colorful houses, art galleries, and cafes.

The food and wine are now considered world-class, including some of the finest vineyards in the world. The food scene runs the gamut from tasting menus to South African braai (bbq) and fresh fish brought in daily and served as the catch of the day.

One cannot visit Cape Town without thinking about the turbulent apartheid era. District Six displays the most difficult of times, as does Robben Island, site of the former maximum-security prison where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were held during apartheid and is now a museum.

Other interesting sites include the Jewish Museum, housed in one of the oldest synagogues in South Africa and now preserved as a museum. If you have an interest in the very different Southern Skies, visit the South African Astronomical Observatory. For arts - Greenmarket Square, the Outdoor Woodstock Street Market, and last but not least, the Diamond Museum.

ON SAFARI

Madikwe Game Reserve is our top choice for the most authentic malaria-free safari experience.

It is a state-owned premier conservation area established in 1991 and is home to all of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo). Over 10,000 animals of 27 major species have been recorded over the past seven years.

The scenery is diverse, as is the wildlife. Stay in two very different areas of Madikwe. Every day will be different and exciting as you spot a lion and its cubs, elephants herding their babies, cheetah in search of their next meal, and Cape Buffalo and zebra grazing in the open plains.

Madikwe is located in South Africa's Northwest Provence on the border of Botswana. It is a short flight from Cape Town. Madikwe is not a ranch or park and not open to general public to drive on their own. Access is restricted to visitors staying at the private lodges.
